22 TARAWADS
It is interesting to note that there are 22 Tarawads in this tiny community. These Tarawads refer to group of families associated and closely related having common head family with deities to be worshipped. Marriage within the members of Tarawad is prohibited as Sapindas. [ same family line]. A member of one Tarawad can marry member of another Tarawad only. The largest tarawad is PALLIPURA followed by DODDAMANE.

Karnataka Vokkaligas
Vokkaligas are one of the most dominating and biggest castes in Karnataka. However, the Vokkaligas of Paniyala in Kerala State have no social relationship of whatsoever nature with the Vokkaligas/Gowdas of Karnataka. These Vokkaligas are tiny community and their total population in India is less than 4,000. Latest census report conducted by the community welfare society will be posted soon.
The total number of families have been identified as less than 700.
Until modern education, 99% of Paniyala Vokkaligas were engaged in small time agricultural activities.
Kannada and Vokkaliga
These Vokkaligas speak in Kannada as they have got strong roots in Karnataka. They deserve appreciation for maintaining Kannada as their mother tongue for centuries in the heart of Kasargod district of Kerala. However, they have lived in perfect harmony with Malayalees and some of Malayalam words are blended with language and used commonly.
This is the fine example of cultural integration. We will hear more about how Tarawad system has entered the life of Vokkaligas as integral part of family and community arrangement. This further shows the impact of Malayalam/Malabar culture on Vokkaligas.
